I am a 54 year old man. I am 5' 8" tall.
At one point I weighed close to 210 pounds. I didn’t like it. I told myself all the things people tell themselves about how they look.
My wife of 18 years left me (it was amicable but still traumatic). She didn’t leave me because I was overweight :-)
I stopped eating. I stopped drinking alcohol. I started walking long distances. I hit the rock climbing gym as much as I could. I started drinking a lot of water.
I lost over 60 pounds in less than 3 months and that was 3 years ago.
I started dating and started to hear women over 40 tell me how hard it is for them to control their weight. It is hard but the good news is that you have total control. You just have to take it.
When people say it is hard to lose weight what they are really saying is that they cannot control what they put in their body. For whatever reason.
That is a fact.
Here’s another fact:
“Body mass index (BMI) — the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters (kg/m2) — is a commonly used index to classify overweight and obesity in adults. WHO defines overweight as a BMI equal to or more than 25, and obesity as a BMI equal to or more than 30.”
I am 1.73 meters tall
I weigh 73 Kilograms
73/1.73 squared = 2.99
So my BMI is 24.41
According to the WHO I am close to overweight. I am going to have a tall glass of clean water and go for a walk.
The main thing keeping people from losing weight is all the people in their lives enabling them. If you have a family tell them (don’t ask) that you are going to lose weight and that you are serious. If your SO ignores you (let’s say out of habit) and starts shaming you to eat more tell them very quietly to stop doing that shit. Today. Don’t wait.
They will know you are serious by watching your actions.
Write down everything you put in your body for a week. Solids, liquids, drugs, everything. Look at the list. Now you can’t say you don’t know.
Write down how much you move.
Again, if you have a family and a job this will be difficult. Do it anyway. Take some PTO if you need to (actions).
Make a plan to move more. Start by walking. Make sure you have shoes that won’t cause an injury.
Do all this and you will realize that you have agency over your body and your whole life. Don’t relinquish it to anyone.
