One of the things my parents (and father in particular) instilled in me was the following:

Once you become an adult, everything that happens to you is your fault. Own it. That was my definition of adulthood. With one exception, I have never been a victim in my life.

In many ways it can be more nuanced than that but not really. Choices have consequences. Period. Make good choices. Easy to say but can be very hard to do. When you make bad choices, lean in and make them better to the degree that you can.

What I’m really talking about is loving yourself. That’s a big one.
